Blockchain and proof of provenance in the agrifood industry.

Blockchain's ability to securely track and prove provenance is a perfect way to establish proof of provenance in the agrifood industry.

Blockchain or Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is rapidly becoming the default global technology to monitor and manage complex extended agrifood supply chains.

This trend is driven by blockchains security, safety, immutability, transparency, shareability and scalability.

The adoption of blockchain is being driven by consumer awareness of the importance of food quality and safety in their health and wellbeing whereas consumers trust in the origin and quality of food has diminished.

In addition, the requirement for secure and auditable food certification and traceability systems has developed the need for a reliable platform to track the origin of these products from farm to fork.

Blockchain’s ability to securely track and prove provenance is a perfect way to establish proof of provenance in the agrifood industry.

Blockchain technology enables the sharing and updating of asset information by securely and scalably linking transactions in a decentralised, peer-to-peer, network. Katlas Blockchain is a Tier 1, Open Source, Turing complete blockchain platform designed to ensure that data is trackable but not hackable with transactions happening with the highest velocity and maximum throughput.

Another way to imagine Katlas blockchain is as a distributed ledger that removes the requirement for a trusted third-party to audit transactions.

Blockchain technology records information on transactions in real time in blocks which are cryptographically linked to each other to produce a secure, scaleable and shareable record of activity.

Blockchain adoption is now global and its traceability use cases are developing rapidly in many different fields.

The European Union (EU) defines traceability as “the ability to access any or all information related to the product under consideration, throughout its entire life cycle, by means of securely recorded shareable identifications‚ÄĚ.

The Katlas blockchain platform can gather both empirical data, for example from IoT devices, and anecdotal data from questionnaires about cultivated crops, pesticide use, fertilizer consumption, machinery involved etc., together with data regarding transactions between individual producers.

Producers may add data about the farm and the farming practices employed, also data related to the crop cultivation process or animals and their welfare can be included.

Information about the farm or factory and its equipment can be also added, including data about the processing methods for each batch, together with information related to the transactions that occurred between producers and distributors.

In the last phase of the supply chain, Katlas blockchain will also record data about shipping details, storage conditions (e.g., temperature and humidity), time in transit by every transport method, and so on, so that highly detailed information about each food item is available, with permission, to everyone involved in the supply chain.

As a whole, therefore, Katlas blockchain will allow the recording of information about food products at every stage of the supply chain to ensure good hygienic conditions and to identify and quickly recall any contaminated products as early as possible.
